Troubleshooting with Dashboard Drill Down

Dashboards are a critical tool in troubleshooting issues as they often immediately illustrate problems in your environment and are a starting point for further investigation.

With the Drill Down feature on the dashboard, you can easily navigate the platform and pinpoint a problem on the dashboard and quickly access the relevant tests, configured with proper filters and agents. This straightforward workflow enhances your ability to promptly troubleshoot issues as they arise.

A common way to utilize this feature is to quickly address issues in a NOC setting with the help of ThousandEyes.

Workflow of the Dashboard Drill Down

In the dashboard, when you click on any data in a widget (like a bar in a bar chart, a card in a number card, a line in a line graph, etc), a pop-up (drill-down component) appears on your screen displaying all the tests associated with the dashboard widget along with the correct contextual information. If a widget has multiple data groupings, like a Time series widget, clicking on the widget will lock the hovering tooltip in place, and you need to further click on the desired group in the hovering tooltip to access the drill-down component.

In this pop-up screen, you can select the test you want to view or combine multiple tests into a multi-service view. The ability to filter the views by multiple agents is only supported in Views 2.0. If you are drilling into Views 1.0, the specific agent context is not maintained. Also, the multi-service view is supported only for Cloud and Enterprise agents.

If you need to find a specific test related to a widget with numerous tests, use the search field to locate and select it.

After you select, a new tab will open and redirect you to the chosen test view with the appropriate contextual information.

The tests displayed in this new tab will have the appropriate filters found in the widget.

You can drill down from any widget to the following areas:

  • Cloud and Enterprise Agents test view, either multi-service or individual tests (BGP tests are not supported)

  • Endpoint Agent view for Scheduled Tests, Browser Sessions, and Local Networks

  • Devices

When using Endpoint Browser Sessions or Local Networks, the drill-down component will display the data's grouping as no associated test exists.

When using the drill-down component, the system will create a URL with appropriate filters and launch a new tab displaying the corresponding view as you select specific tests. However, please note that this URL has a character limit of 8000. If your selections result in a URL that exceeds this limit (which can happen if too many agents or filters are chosen), a warning message will appear. To prevent this issue, we suggest filtering agents or tests by labels rather than selecting individual ones.

Examples explaining the Dashboard Drill Down

  2. A pop-up opens on your screen, allowing you to view the associated test with the widget.

  1. Click on the test, in this case facebook.com.

  2. A new tab opens in the Cloud and Enterprise Agent Viewss with the Current Test filtered to facebook.com and the selected Metric is Jitter

Drilling down in a multi-test view

  2. A pop-up opens on your screen, allowing you to view the associated tests with the widget.

  3. You can sort the tests in ascending or descending order of the value associated with the Metric (Latency in this case) and search for a desired test using the search box.

  4. In this example, enter facebook in the search bar.

  1. Now select the tests and click the Open in Views button located at the bottom of the pop-up.

  2. A new tab opens in the Cloud and Enterprise Agent Views with the Current Test filtered to the selected tests and the selected Metric is Latency.

Drilling down in a Time Series Widget

This example explains a scenario of the Time Series widget wherein you must click the hovering tooltip to bring up the drill-down component. Also, the data represented in the tooltip may have multiple groups of data, from which you need to select the right data to bring up the drill-down component.

  • Hover your mouse on the timeline that displays the Page Load Time. For a specific round, select your desired test in the tooltip; in this case http://twitter.com.

  • A pop-up opens on your screen, allowing you to view the associated test with the widget.
