Network Outages

Network outage events represent a series of events that affect a large number of terminal interfaces and associated Network metrics at one or more points of presence of a given service provider (ASN).
On the Internet Insights > Views screen, the top portion shows a timeline, as shown in the image below. (Network Outages displays by default.)
The Network Outages timeline at the top of the view screen lets you filter or display data as follows:
Metric: Affected Tests, Interfaces, Locations, or Outages
Outage Scope is All or With Affected Tests, meaning you can limit application outages to only show those affecting your own tests.
The Network filter lets you search for and choose one or more networks by name or Autonomous System (AS) number, for example IP-Max Network Services (AS 25091).
Click Add a filter to add filters including:
Outage filters
Outage Scope - same filter that’s already displayed
Affected Provider - choose by provider type (e.g., CDN), region, or by name
Network filters
Network - same filter that’s already displayed
Interface Location - choose by region, country, or city
Interface IP Address - use the search box to narrow down the long list of numeric IP addresses
Application filters
Affected Test - these are tests potentially impacted by the outage, as described in My Affected Tests
Affected Hostname/Domain - quickly search for a domain like “google.com” or a hostname like “myserver.domain.com”
Server Location - search by region, country, or city
Server Prefix - use to find a server with a particular IP prefix
Server Network - use to find by Autonomous System (AS) number or name, for example InterVoice, Inc. (AS 393222)
When you've selected a timeslice in the timeline, the Internet Insights > Views > Map tab shows a map of the outage(s) along with summarized outage information.
The Internet Insights > Views > Topology tab displays different information, depending on whether you have Network Outages or Application Outages selected as the view at the top of the screen.
If you have the Network Outages view selected, you’ll see a path visualization similar to the one shown below.
The Internet Insights Network Outages topology view uses nodes to represent the status of network Points of Presence (PoPs) and the impact on interconnected networks. These nodes represent networks or locations, with sources on the left and targets on the right.

What it signifies
Comments
Identifiable node
A blue node indicates that IP information is available.
Node in agent’s network
A green node indicates a node that was identified as inside the source network, as specified by the Autonomous System of the Agent.
Network PoPs where outages are occurring or have occurred
A red node signifies Network PoPs where outages are occurring or have occurred, depending on the selected timeline. When hovering over a red node, the tooltip displays the following information related to the outage:
Duration of the outage
Number of interfaces impacted
Locations of the outage
IP addresses and prefixes
Networks affected by this outage
List of affected tests
ThousandEyes visibility, percentage of all tests affected.
A yellow node indicates other networks directly affected by the outage, located upstream from the red nodes. Yellow nodes are identified through test failures that pinpoint the source of the outage (red node).
When hovering over a yellow node, the tooltip displays the following information:
Affected duration
Number of interfaces impacted
IP address and prefix
Outage network
Time outage was detected
Outage location
Outage IP addresses
Outage prefixes
Unidentifiable node
A white node indicates that IP information is not available.
Affected network path
This indicates a network path issue, which might involve a problem with the link between the affected node and the node where the outages are occurring or have occurred.
Network path previously reachable but now unreachable
These represent a network path that was previously reachable but have since become unreachable.
The tooltips in the Network Outage Topology Interface provide access to detailed outage information.
Outage Duration: Elapsed time since the outage began.
Outage Detected: The time from roundId
when the outage was detected.
Interfaces Impacted: Details the specific network interfaces affected by the outage.
Outage Location: The geographic location of the outage, providing context for regional issues.
IP Address: The specific IP address associated with the outage.
Prefix: Network prefix associated with the affected IP.
Networks Impacted: Names and ASNs of the networks affected by the outage, including those indirectly affected (represented by yellow nodes).
Affected Tests: URLs of tests that are being impacted by the network outage.
ThousandEyes Visibility: Indicates the percentage of all tests affected by the outage. The "ThousandEyes Visibility" is calculated as follows:
For a Node Group: TE visibility = (Number of failed tests for all nodes in the node group / Total number of tests for all nodes in the node group) * 100.
For a Single Node: TE visibility = (Number of failed tests for the single node / Total number of tests for the single node) * 100.
The total number of tests for all nodes in a node group is equivalent to the total number of tests for that ASN. The ASN is the same for all nodes within a given node group.
Outage Network: The network provider experiencing the outage.
Outage IP Address: The IP address where the outage is detected.
Outage Prefix: The subnet information associated with the outage.
To navigate the topology and interpret the data:
First, ensure an outage was selected from timeline at the top of the page
Select a Node: Hover on any node to bring up the tooltip with detailed information.
Trace the Path: Follow the lines connecting the nodes to understand the path of the outage's impact.
Examine Timelines: Use the timeline feature to review the progression of the outage over time.
By default, sources are displayed as aggregated by country. IP and domain are not displayed. The number of agents is tabulated in the menu that appears when you hover over the source node.
By default, intermediate nodes are aggregated by Autonomous System (AS) number.
The menu that appears when you hover over the node shows the number of affected destinations and provides a link that shows the list of affected tests in a pop-up window.
Affected ASes are determined from public rDNS on the target IP and not target domain.
By default, only links with 0% of traces are shown.
Targets show the AS number and the number of affected interfaces in the view. The tooltip that appears when you hover over the node will show the number of affected destinations and provide a link that will show the list of affected tests in a pop-up window. Another link is available that shows only outages affecting the destinations relevant to that node.
Click Next nodes (if available) to see more nodes impacted by an outage event.
The Topology tab includes Showing (i.e., filtering) and Grouping options to highlight aspects of the topology visualization, as shown below.
Nodes with outages are tallied under Highlighting. You can narrow the highlighting using the field Highlight nodes that match all / any and then choosing a list item such as Test name, Location, IP address, Prefix, or Domain. For example, if you choose Domain, a list of affected domains appears, and you can select one of those to highlight only those affected nodes on the path visualization.
