Router Agent Device Support

When the device agent is embedded into a CPE/router, it is integrated within the firmware shipped with the device. There are two flavours of firmware: custom and generic, and is deployed based on the service provider's needs.

Custom vs Generic Firmware

The router agent is integrated into either:

  • Custom firmware

    For specific service providers that work with manufacturers and have their own custom software deployed to their CPEs. Common amongst tier 1 ISPs.

  • Generic firmware

    For service providers that take 'off-the-shelf' firmware from manufacturers like Linksys, Hitron, Zyxel, Kaon, TP-Link.

When integrating firmware, we work directly with both service providers and manufacturers. For manufacture-led integrations, the agent may already be pre-integrated into the firmware of a device, meaning our agent is ready to activate if an ISP is already using, or plans to purchase, one of these devices for their installation base. Activating pre-integrated Agents via the device / firmware manufacturer

To activate the agent, contact your representative from the device / firmware manufacturer, like Plume or OpenSync, and ensure the firmware version on the devices in the install base supports the agent. If it's outdated, they must update it.

For example, for Plume and OpenSync devices, the agent is activated through Plume Cloud for each service provider, based on the device model - meaning smaller group activations are not possible. Other manufacturers may have different options.

After the agent is activated, ThousandEyes will define and manage the testing process.
