Alert Notifications

Alert notifications are delivered either via email, SMS, classic or custom webhooks, or custom-built integrations – including integrations with sites such as PagerDuty, Slack, ServiceNow and AppDynamics. Notification recipients are configured in the Alert Rules > Notifications tab, or through the Integrations page. Alerts will be active in the ThousandEyes platform as long as your alert rule conditions are met, but notification of the alert being active will only occur at the start of the active period. Alerts can optionally be configured to send notifications once the alert is no longer active.
In addition to presenting the alert in the app.thousandeyes.com UI, the ThousandEyes platform can deliver notifications of alerts through a number of services via Alert Rules > Notifications. The image below displays the notifications configuration options of a new alert rule. Configuration of notifications is the same for all alert rule types.
Email section
Send emails to: Click the dropdown, then use the search box to find and select the email addresses that will receive alert notifications for this alert rule.
Edit external emails: [Optional] Click to add new email addresses, or remove listed email addresses. When you add a new email address here, it is included in the list in the Email > Send emails to field.
Send an email when the alert clears: [Optional] Select this checkbox if you want the recipient to be notified when the alert is resolved.
Add message: [Optional] You can write a custom message to be included in the email body of the alert notification. Note that the greater-than (>) and less-than (<) characters are not allowed in this field.
Webhooks section
Send notifications to: Click the dropdown, then use the search box to find and select the webhook-enabled services that will receive alert notifications for this alert rule.
Edit webhooks: [Optional] Click to add a new webhook, or to edit or delete existing webhooks. When you add a new webhook here, it is included in the list in the Webhooks > Send notifications to field.
Integrations section
Send notifications to: Click the dropdown, then use the search box to find and select the integration that will receive alert notifications for this alert rule.
Manage Integrations: [Optional] Redirects you to the Integrations screen where you can create or edit an integration that can then be added to the Integrations > Send Notifications to field.
Classic and custom webhooks permit users to send JSON-formatted alert data to a webhooks-enabled server via HTTP. The information can then be programmatically processed and subsequent actions taken automatically. For more information on configuring ThousandEyes alert rules with webhooks, see Standard Notification Methods.
For notifications into AppDynamics, ThousandEyes sends alert notifications to an AppDynamics instance for a specific application. You can set up multiple integrations to the same instance, targeting different applications or severity levels. For more information on configuring ThousandEyes alert notifications with AppDynamics, see AppDynamics for Alert Notifications.
For notifications into PagerDuty, ThousandEyes allows you to use an Escalation Policy (which defines rules for notification destinations, repeat notifications and other actions) in your PagerDuty service to receive notifications from ThousandEyes. For more information on configuring ThousandEyes alert rules with PagerDuty, see PagerDuty for Alert Notifications.
For notifications into Slack, ThousandEyes allows alert data to be sent to a chat or instant-message application. Users can send notifications to the Slack channel of their choice. For more information on configuring ThousandEyes alert rules with Slack, see Slack for Alert Notifications.
For notifications into ServiceNow, ThousandEyes facilitates delivery of direct notification into a ServiceNow account so it may be processed and acted upon based on workflows defined within that system. For more information on configuring alert rules to send notifications directly into the ServiceNow platform, see ServiceNow for Alert Notifications.
