Using the DNS Server View
When you create a DNS server test, you can view test results with the DNS Server view. For more information about views, see Getting Started with Views. For more information about DNS tests, see Tests: DNS Layer.
The example below shows the results for a DNS server test configured for thousandeyes.com:
Select a DNS server test to display the DNS server view.
Select specific agents to use for the timeline, map, and tabs.
Select specific DNS servers to use for the timeline, map, and tabs.
Use the Views menu to access network and BGP views.
Map Tab
The Map tab displays the average availability and resolution time from every listed nameserver and agent location. This is the default tab selected when you first access the DNS server view.
Servers Tab
The Servers tab reports the date, number of errors, and the average resolution time for the target domain name configured for each listed nameserver.
To filter on a specific DNS server, you can either select Filter by this from the ellipsis menu shown at the end of the server's row (shown above), or you can select the server from the Servers menu at the top of the screen.
The Servers tab now shows the date, mappings, any error details, and the resolution time, in microseconds. The Agents tab label also changes to indicate it is now showing traffic from agents to the selected server.
Select "Add to timeline overlays" to add a server from this list to the timeline overlay. For more information about using timeline overlays, see the Timeline Overlays section in this document.
Agents Tab
The Agents tab reports the date, minimum resolution time across all servers, availability percentage of all servers, and any error details for the target domain name for each listed agent.
To filter on a specific DNS server, you can either select "Filter by this" from the ellipses menu shown at the end of the agent's row (shown above in the Servers Tab section), or you can select the server from the Agents menu at the top of the screen.
The Agents tab now shows the date, mappings, any error details, and the resolution time, in microseconds. The Servers tab label also changes to indicate it is now showing traffic coming from the selected agent.
Select "Add to timeline overlays" to add an agent from this list to the timeline overlay. For more information about using the timeline overlays, see the Timeline Overlays section in this document.
Metrics
Available DNS metrics include availability and resolution time. The example below uses the availability metric.
To change the selected metric, use the metrics selector menu. Hovering over the name of the metric displays a label with the text Set as selected metric.
Select multiple metrics by clicking the checkbox next to the name of the metric listed in the selector menu.
The selected metrics will appear in the timeline portion of the DNS server view.
Metrics that cannot be compared in this view are labeled Unable to compare with this metric.
Timeline Overlays
Two overlays are available to enrich the timeline view, Agents and Servers.
Adding Agents to the Timeline
To add agents to the timeline, first select the Agents overlay option. Then click the checkbox to the right of each agent you want to display on the timeline.

To add servers to the timeline, first select the Servers overlay option. Then click the checkbox to the right of each server you want to display on the timeline.
